Widely circulated footage seemed to capture Jones making an obscene gesture toward opposing supporters, though he insists he was actually signaling approval to Dallas supporters in attendance as his team clinched a 37-22 victory.
“That was unfortunate. It was kind of an exchange with Cowboys supporters out in front of us,” Jones explained during a radio appearance. “Present was a swarm of Cowboys fans—not Jets fans, our fans. The whole venue was brimming with excitement for the Cowboys.”
He further clarified that the signal was completely accidental, happening amid the elation following the team’s final touchdown. “I simply put up the incorrect finger,” he noted. “It was inadvertently done. This is sincere. If you want to call it unplanned, you can. However, it got resolved pretty quick.”
