California is Fully Free of Drought for the First Time in 25 Years.
Following 25 long years, every region of California is enduring drought conditions. This landmark event follows challenging years marked by a lack of precipitation that intensified wildfire risks and strained its huge agribusiness.
A Chart Shows No Abnormally Dry Areas
A recent update from the federal monitoring program confirmed that California in its entirety is clear of dry or drought conditions. This development resulted from a period of heavy precipitation that helped fill key lakes like Oroville and Shasta far beyond their historic averages.
“To those aged 25 and below you’ve only known in a world where California has been entering or recovering from drought,” remarked a weather expert.
After Severe Systems to Wet Holidays
The path to this point included intense and deadly winter storms that battered the state in recent years, leading to widespread flooding, electrical failures, and deaths. While those storms started to mitigate the drought, they did not eliminate it.
Until late December, areas like northeastern California were considered unusually parched. Heavy rains at the beginning of January eliminated those final dry conditions.
A Crucial Snowpack Is Below Average
Yet, hydrologists note that the end of drought status is not the same as being out of the woods. Current readings of the mountain snow accumulation show it at roughly seven-tenths of the average for this date.
This snowpack, which provides a significant portion of the state's water supply as it melts in the spring, is an essential component for the year ahead. State experts stress that it is premature to draw conclusions for the coming year.
“The trend we’re looking at right now is more rain than snow,” said a state water resources manager. “The goal is the snow accumulation to pick up by April 1st so that we’re closer to average.”
Even as the official status indicates no dryness, attention turns to preserving this hard-won hydrological health for the coming seasons.
